Abstract

6176. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, [Stringham, J. H., and Elmendorf, D. L.]. March 12. Flame and incandescent igniters.-Ignition is effected by trapping a portion of the hot gases at or just after the time of explosion in a chamber 4 containing some refractory substance, and re-admitting the trapped gases to the cylinder in the next cycle. The chamber is connected to atmosphere at each cycle through a passage 6. The passage 5 from the cylinder and the passage 6 are valve-controlled so that the passage 5 is opened first then the passage 6, the passages being closed in reverse order. An auxiliary igniter 27 is used to start.
