Abstract

Nitrogen oxides.-In the production of nitric oxide by the ignition of a charge in an internalcombustion engine, the charge, during compression, is agitated and mixed by the introduction of a jet of gas, steam, or air at high velocity, and the residual exhaust gases are scavenged from the cylinder by warm or cold air. The charge is preferably delivered into the cylinder also under pressure.
