Abstract

1598. Lucas, R. Jan. 22. Two-stroke-cycle engines; driving- gear; silencing air suction; cylinders, arrangement of igniters in.-Fig. 2 shows a two-cylinder two-stroke-cycle engine having common combustion and crank chambers and pistons driving independently a pair of geared crank-shafts. The cylinders are arranged out of line with the crank-shaft axes; and the driving-gear is balanced by pairs of counterweights 10, 17 arranged 90 degrees apart on the crank-disks. Air from a silencing- chamber 20 is drawn through a suctionoperated valve 13, which carries a wedge-shaped fuel valve 12, Fig. 5, and enters the crank chambers through a port located beneatb a valve 19, the air being afterwards transferred to the cylinders through a port 15 and carrying with it fuel previously sprayed into the transfer port through a nozzle 11. The entry of the charges through the port 15 facilitates the expulsion of the exhaust gases through a port 16. Fig. 4 shows a section through the valve 19 and the transfer ports, the arrangement being such that the bulk of the air may, when necessary, be directed through the port which contains the fuel nozzle. To prevent the failure of the ignition when using weak charges, an igniter is inserted at 18.
