26,933. Fowler, R. H., and Tuer, G. S. Dec. 5. Hauling and winding engines.-The two-speed winding-engine described in Specification No. 2595, A.D. 1883, is modified so that the low-speed bevelwheel is free to turn on the upright shaft and is always in gear with the corresponding pinion on the driving-shaft, while the fast-speed wheel is slidably keyed to the upright shaft so as to gear with the driving-pinion in one extreme position, run clear in an intermediate position, and to clutch the other wheel in the other extreme position. The wheel a revolves on the upright shaft b in the fixed bearing c, and is always in gear with the pinion d on the driving-shaft e. The wheel f is slidably keyed to the shaft b, and can be placed in or out of gear with the pinion k by means of the lever i, collar h, and sleeve g. When in gear with the pinion k, the wheel f drives the drum at the fast speed. When the wheel f is slid down so that the teeth n lock with teeth o on the nave of the wheel a, the drum is driven at a low speed.
