Abstract

10,674. Freeman, G. C. May 9. Driving - mechanism clutches. - Relates to twospeed gearing for motor cycles &c. A pinion 2, fixed on the driving- shaft, is geared to a concentric loose wheel 7 by means of wheels 3, 4 fixed to spindles 5 which are mounted in a disc secured to the end of the bearing 8. The pulley 12 encloses the gearing and is formed with a ratchet-wheel 11 adapted to be driven by pawls on a plate 10 secured to the wheel 7. Beyond the gearing the shaft carries a clutch formed by a domed disc, or by a series of segments 14 hinged on a sleeve 15. When the sleeve is moved inwards, the segments bind in the groove in the pulley, which is then driven at the speed of the shaft, its ratchet-wheel overrunning the pawls on the plate 10. The clutch may be worked by an external sleeve and levers, or by a rod passing through the shaft.
