Abstract
120,332. Crockwell, C. H., and Farmer & Sons, Sir J. March 20, 1918. Driving machines.-Printing, calendering, and like machines which require to be run at low speed as when threading the paper through the machine prior to running at full speed, are driven by two motors; the low-speed motor driving the second-motion shaft through a worm and worm-wheel and an over-running clutch comprising a ratchet mechanism in which the pawls are raised by the action of a friction ring when the high-speed motor is driving. As shown, applied to a calendering-machine of which a is one bowl or roller, this roller a is driven 'by gears b, c from a second motion shaft d driven at full speed by gear e, f from the shaft of the main motor g, and at low speed from the motor h through a worm j and wormwheel k. As shown in Fig. 3, the wheel k drives the shaft d through an over-running clutch comprising pawls m pivoted at o on the wheel k and attached to bell-crank levers p. One arm of each lever p engages a slot in a lug of a friction ring q on the hub of the ratchet-wheel n which is keyed on the shaft d. When the low-speed motor h is driving the pawls m are moved into engagement with the wheel n, but when the high-speed motor g takes up the drive the ring q operates the levers p to lift the pawls m, this movement being limited by stops r.
