13,197. Leavitt, F. M. June 17, 1905, [date applied far under-Patents Act, 1901]. Gyroscopic apparatus.-The steering-gyroscope of a torpedo is speeded up by gearing from the propelling-engine, the driving-shaft employed also acting to hold the gyroscope steady till its speed is attained. A spur-wheel h on the propeller shaft C engages a long pinion j on a shaft L adapted to slide in a bearing g in the casing of the gyroscope, and adapted also to drive by a clutch formed thereon the axle of the gyroscope J. The shaft L while engaging the axle bears in the boss m formed on the inner gimbal ring so as to hold the fly-wheel steady. The shaft is withdrawn after an interval by a fork Q when the latter is actuated by a slide P, which is moved by a ratchet pawl 0 on a lever N rocked by a cam M on the propeller shaft.
