A sleeve b, mounted free to slide on the hub a, is formed with teeth e engaging with pinions h gearing also with internal teeh i formed on the hub and carried by pins g secured to a flange f<1> formed on the chain- wheel f, which is mounted in ball bearings k in the spoke flange j. The sleeve b can be slid so that teeth b<1> on one end engage teeth a on the hub, as shown in the lower part of Fig. 1, and give the low speed, or so that teeth b<2> on the other end engage with teeth r' on a fixed casing r as shown in the upper part of Fig. 1, and give the high speed, or in an intermediate position for coasting by an appliance of the type described in Specification No. 24,703, A.D. 1899, and comprising a disc c mounted in ball bearings on the sleeve b, fitted with pins p moving in inclined slots in the casing r and actuated by a pin m, which projects into a hollow arm n, which can be slid along a slot in the casing r by suitable mechanism.
