15,927. Diamant, S. July 14. Clutches.-Epicyclic devices are arranged between the driving and driven parts of friction clutches for use with motor-cars &c. in order that the driven part may be started slowly. Gearing with the driving-part 4 and driven part 2, Fig. 1, are cones 3, 1 sliding on the casing m of a differential gear, the bevel-wheels g, f being secured to the driving-shaft a and driven shaft b, respectively. A strong spring p normally presses the cone 2 to the right, and a weaker spring q presses the cone 1 to the left. To disengage the shaft b, the cone 2 is pressed to the left and the spring q disengages the cones 3, 4. The cones 1, 3 then rotate at half the speed of the shaft a. Fig. 2 shows the use of an ordinary epicyclic gear, the cones 1, 3 being secured directly to the casing m carrying the planet-wheels.
