Seizure of the valve b is prevented by a regulating-s c r w c. The engine is provided with two or more groups of cylinders placed side by side, or having their axes inclined, or at 180 degrees to one another. The cylinders are controlled by a half- or quarter-speed rotary valve. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the cylinders are inclined at 90 degrees and connected to one crank. The position of the admission and exhaust ports of the valve b are shown at A, E. The cylinders may be brought closer together and connected to opposite cranks as shown in Fig. 8. The valve is driven at quarter-speed, and the diameter of the ports is equal to one-sixteenth of the circumference of the valve.
