7946. Muirhead, W. April 5. Open -hearth and Bessemer processes; scrap, utilizing.-Cast iron is desiliconized, for use in making steel, by melting, in an open-hearth or other furnace, cast-iron scrap and adding from time to time cast-iron borings, or iron or steel turnings; or a charge of burnt scrap may be melted alone. The molten charge may be cast into pigs, or run directly into a converter or into a basic-lined open-hearth furnace already charged with malleable iron or steel scrap or turnings.
