22,730. Johnson, H., ani Frier, G. W. Nov. 11. Iron and steel furnaces.-In the manufacture of steel by a combined pneumatic and open-hearth process, highly-heated steel scrap or alloy and molten pig iron are respectively introduced from a cupola or blast furnace A, and heating-furnace C, into a fixed converter B, whence the partiallyrefined charge is run into an open-hearth furnace D, which may be basic-lined. A siphon-shaped trap A', Fig. 4 is provided for the cupola or blastfurnace tap-hole, to prevent slag from flowing into the channel A<3>, connecting the furnace with the converter. A movable brick-lined cover is fitted to the top of the converter, which is also provided with a series of slag-holes. The discharge passage B<6> of the furnace C opens into the upper part of the converter. The waste heat from the furnace C may be utilized for heating the blast for the converter and open-hearth furnace.
