Abstract
18,398. Biewend, H. Aug. 14, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Electric furnaces. -An induction furnace for steelmaking, in which impure pig-iron and scrap iron can be treated, is provided with an auxiliary hearth, into which the whole of the molten charge can be caused to flow for removal of slag, addition of reagents, or other operations. The furnace shown can be tilted to transfer the charge to or from the auxiliary hearth f, this operation also mixing the charge. While the furnace is tilted, the slag may be heated directly by the induced current. The auxiliary hearth may be balanced by a counterweight, and is connected with the annular heating-channel b by an overflow e, and provided with a slag hole g and taphole h.
