Abstract
4937. Highfield, F. W. Feb. 25. Dry processes of extracting lead; matte processes for copper; distilling zinc. - In the reduction of complex sulphide ores, the ore after roasting is mixed with a reducing-agent and heated in a resistance furnace with a reducing- atmosphere to volatilize the zinc. The lead is then run off, and the residual matte is further heated to enable a silicious slag to be formed ; decomposition of the matte may then be promoted by the action of a direct current. The furnace hearth B is supported by a carriage B' and held against the walls A by means of jacks B', and has a lining of silica C covered with a layer C<1> of refractory material such as magnesite, dolomite, or chromite, conductive when hot. Three hollow water-cooled electrodes D are embedded in the lining, and a central electrode F is arranged at the base of the hearth to co-operate with a water-cooled electrode F<2> depending from the roof. A rotation of the'molten charge caused by the action of the three-phase current supplied to the electrodes D may be increased by an arrangement of intermediate auxiliary electrodes. At starting, a charge of ore and limestone is desulphurized by means of a blast injected through tuyeres G, whereupon current is supplied to the electrodes D, the blast is cut off, and carbon and iron are added to the charge. The zinc vapours escape at a temperature of about 950‹ C. through an ontlet A<2>, and the lead is tapped. The temperature is then raised to about 1300‹ C., and current may also be supplied to the electrodes F, F<2> to refine the matte.
