3102. Benwell, R. L. Feb. 7. Tyres, pneumatic.-In a tyre with a tread built up of rubber, leather, or alternate rubber and leather strips a, or the like, arranged circumferentially around the tyre to present their edges to the road, and with a cover of two leather, canvas and rubber, &c. strips b, the outer edges b<1> of the cover are secured by bolts c between the strips a, so that outer strips a' support the edges of the cover when it is deformed. The outer strips a<1> are preferably deeper than the central ones. The inner edges b<2> of the cover are secured to the sides of the felloes by clamping-rings e. The tread is strengthened and made non-slipping by metal plates g placed outside and between the strips a in zigzag order. A band k of soft fabric is placed between the tread and the air-tube i. When applied to twin tyres, the treads are flexibly connected by riveting together between the tyres an adjacent pair of deep strips.
