Abstract

26,070. Charlton, F. J. L. Nov. 17. Driving-mechanism.-Relates to change speed gearing suitable for motor - cycles. A wheel C, slidably mounted on the engine shaft A, is connected to a wheel D for the direct drive by clutch members C<1>, D<1>. The wheel D may be secured to the belt pulley &c. B. A second speed is effected through gears G<2>, G<1> rotating together upon an eccentric &c. sleeve I<2>, which is turned about a fixed stud E to advance these gears into mesh with the wheels C, D, respectively. The wheel C has a groove C<2> receiving the jaws of a striking-lever H, which is pivoted at one end H<1> and engages at the other end H<2> in a cam-groove I' on the member I<2>. The lever H and consequently the clutch are operated simultaneously with the gears G<1>, G<2> by actuating an arm F secured to the sleeve P. To avoid shocks, the wheel C may be made slidable upon a sleeve J, which screws upon a thread K upon the shaft A. The screwing action is resisted by a spring L. Or the wheels G<2>, G<1> may be coupled by ratchet teeth, so as to allow relative movement under the action of a spring. A three-speed gear is described in which geared drives are obtained through two sets of gearing, the countershafts being carried by cranks taking the place of the eccentric sleeve I<2>.
