Abstract
4529. Isherwood, L. A., and Isherwood, L. Feb. 22. Carding-engines. - The main drive to the cylinder is effected through a single pulley in connexion with which certain parts are arranged so that they can occupy one of three positions relatively to the pulley. In one position the cylinder is driven for normal working, in another position the cylinder is driven at a reduced speed in the opposite direction for grinding, while in an intermediate position the pulley runs loose on the shaft. The driving- pulley a is mounted upon a sleeve a<3> loose upon the cylinder shaft b, and has two cone surfaces a<1>, a<2> adapted to co-operate with two other cone surfaces c, d. One or other pair of cone surfaces may be in engagement, or both may be out of contact. The driving- pulley may be moved by a lever m<2> to cause the cone a<1> to engage with the cone c, which is mounted directly upon the shaft b. This provides the normal drive for the cylinder. If the pulley a is moved to bring the cones a<2>, d into engagement, the drive then takes place through gearing f, g, g<1>, h<1>. The cone d is loose on the shaft and is mounted on a sleeve d<1> carrying the gear f. The gears g, g<1>, are carried by a box d<3> formed integrally with the sleeve a<3>, which can be secured by a set-screw n<1> to a part of the frame. The gears g' engage a gear-wheel h fixed on the shaft b. For normal driving, the set-screw n<1> is withdrawn. The lever m<2> is provided with a pivoted handle m<4> arranged between springs m<6> and adapted to engage one of three notches in a plate k. The three notches correspond to the three positions of the driving-pulley.
