Blowpipe burners; atmospheric gas burners. -A " blowpipe " burner is operated by a steam jet, the steam being produced from water flowing through a passage or passages heated by the combustion of a portion of the gas apart from that which burns in the blowpipe flame. The steam supplied may be controlled by a suitable valve. A particular form of the burner is described in which a pipe d, coiled either inside or outside the cut-away portion b of the gas tube a, is connected at one end e with a pressure water supply and at the other end f through a union piece h to a jet g, which is arranged coaxially with the blowpipe tube and is controlled by a needle valve i. The gas entering the tube a by way of the pipe l burns at m and also round the coil, the air for the latter combustion entering through the perforated metal sleeve c, which may be of gauze. Steam produced by the heating of the water in the coil blows out at the jet and converts the flame at m into a blowpipe flame. The burner may be used in smelting- furnaces and the like and also for ordinary purposes.
