To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that we, THOMAS J. McGee and JAMES (Litmonicn, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and tatc of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in liurners, ot' which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the. t
accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in burners, and the invention has for its object to provide a novel burner for denatured alcohol and gas.
Our invention aims to provide a burner which when placed in operation, will generate gas from denatured alcohol and produce a tlame of greater caloric intensity than derived from art iiicial or natural gas. In this connection, our burner is also designed to use artificial or natural gas, but we construct the same whereby the gas will he. placed in a more combustible condition prior to being consumed, thus saving gas and increasing the heating qualities of the burner.
The present invention is an improvement upon our burner for which an application for patent was filed Apliil 15th, 1907, Serial No. 368,358, and in the present invention we have devised novel means for retarding and regulating the flow oi denatured alcohol, also novel means for controlling the admission of gas to the burner proper.
The detail construction entering into our invention will he lna'einai'ter more fully described and then spta-itically pointed out in the appended claims, and referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, inwhich'.
Figure l is a front elevation of our burner partly in section, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
The burner comprises a cylindrical tasing 1 having a closed end 2, while its opposite end is closed by a detachable head 3 carrying an inlet pipe 4. A set screw 5 is employed for holding the head 3 and the pipe 4 in the end of the casing l. The casing is provided with a plurality of longitudinally disposed alining openings 6, and adjacent to said openings, we provide the casing with a trough 7 substantially V-shaped in cross section for asbestos 8, the trough and asbestos extending from one end of the burner to the other.
Connecting with the inlet pipe 4 is a funnel-shaped mixer 9 for admitting air to the pipe 4 to commingle with the gas admitted to the mixer through a pipe 10 extending therein. The inner end of the pipe 10 is provided with a nipple ll while the outer end is provided with an elbow 12 connecting with another elbow l4 by a pipe 15, in which is an ordinary form of valve it, for controlling the admission of gas to the pipe 10. Arranged above the burner casing l and connecting with the elbow 14 is-a pipe 17, said pipe being connected by el bows 18 to another pipe it), said pipe being arranged I above the pipe 17 and vertically alining with said pipe and the burner casing l. The end ol' the pipe it) is provided with an elbow 2t) connecting with a pipe 2l leading to a conventional form of valve 22 for controlling the inlet of denatured alcohol or gas to the pipes it) and i7. The valve 2'2 connects with a main supply pipe 23, and a connecting with said pipe isa pilot light tube 2- which 1 extends forwardly and is bent downwardly and passes l obliquely under the pipe l7 terminating in close proximity to the asbestos S at the mixer end of the burner l and at a point above the unperforat ed portion of the casing 1, where the latter receives the detachable head 3. The pilot light tube 24 is provided with an ordinary valve 25, for controlling the flow ot' denatured alcohol through the tube.
Prior to assembling the parts of the burner, we provide the pipe it) with a piece of gauze as, the gauze extending from one end of the pipe to the other and retarding the flow ot' denatured alcohol through said pipe, at the same time regulating the quantity of denatured alcohol admitted to the pipe 17. The burner casing l is also provided beneath the openings ti with apieceoi gauze 27, to prevent a flash-back ot' the tlame ol the burner when in operation.
To place the burner in operation, and use denatured alcohol as a fuel or heating medium, a quantity of alcohot is allowed to flow through the tube 24, whereby it can be ignited upon the asbestos S and provide a pilot light. In the mean time, the denatured alcohol admitted to the pipes 19 and 17 is being vaporized by the llame ot' the pilot light, and as soon as a suilicient quantity oi the denatured alcohol has been vaporized, the vapor or gas becoming heated and expanding will tlow into the burner and can be ignited. The pilot lightcan then be extinguished by closing the valve 35. The piece of gauze 2G in the pipe [9 allows the denatured al cohol to [low steadily through said pipe and enter the pipe l7, where the alcohol that. has not been vaporized, in the pipe i9 is vaporized in said pipe 17. This vapor, already warm, is further heated in pipe 17 before its admission to the mixer. The (plant ityot vapor or gas passing into the mixer 9 can be controlled by the valve 16.
When the burner is used with artiiicial or natural gas, the gas being heated in the pipes 17 and if) prior to entering the burner expands and is placed in a better com bustiblc condition than it the gas was not heated.
We do not care to confine ourselves to the spccitie form of mixer as disclosed or to the shape and size of the burner.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. A burner for denatured alcohol or gas, consisting of a casing, having openings formed therein. a trough for asbestos carried by said casing. adjacent to said openings, an inlet pipe carried by one end of said casing. a mixer carried by said pipe. pipes connecting with said mixer and arranged one above the other in vertical alinenn-nt with said lmrneu valves carried by said pipes. a main supply pipe connecting with the valve carried by the uppermost pipe. :1 pilot light tube connecting with said supply pipe and extending obliquely under the lowermost pipe and terminating above an unperforatetl portion of saitl easing and in dose proximity to the trough for as- In-stos and. :1 piece of gauze arranged in the uppermost pipe above said burner.
