Abstract

20,325. Challiss, P. G., Oct. 7. Gas and like engines.-To keep the compression constant at all speeds, the capacity of the combustion chamber and the lift of the inlet valves are simultaneously adjusted by regulating the position of the crank-shaft and cam shafts with respect to the cylinder. Fig. 1 shows a four-strokecycle engine in which the crank-shaft A is mounted in bearings B (one of which is shown) carried by inclined guide-plates C in the crank casing. The position of the guides C is adjusted by mechanicallyactuated cams S. To regulate simultaneously the opening of the inlet valve, the position of the cam shaft is adjusted by mounting it in bearings formed in an extension B' of the crank-shaft bearings B. The inlet-valve spindle P' is actuated by a rocking lever 0 and a cam R carried by the cam shaft. If preferred, the opening of the exhaust valves may be adjusted similarly to the inlet valves.
