Abstract

13,262. Crockford, A. H. June 27. Gas and like engines.-To obtain a balanced engine, both the cylinder and piston reciprocate. Fig. 2 shows a vertical engine in which lugs c on the cylinder slide in guides b. The lugs c receive the ends of connecting-rods j acting on a crank at each side of the piston crank. The cylinder consists of a steel-tube body d and cast ends e, f secured by bolts g. The main shaft drives a countershaft t through gearing. Tappets s on the shaft t act on levers w, on which rest loose sliding pins, which act on the valve spindles, and so open the valves against the action of springs. The cover and body of the valve chambers are held together by bolts 8. In the modified arrangement shown in Fig. 5, the cover e is secured by a screw in a strap 5 turning on pivots 6.
