Abstract
23,965. Musgrave, F. E. Nov. 5. Valves and valve gear.-The cylinder has an admission valve-chest on one side and an exhaust valve-chest on the other, in which work separate piston valves for each end of the cylinder. Fig. 3 shows the admission valve 6 and gear for the lowpressure cylinder of a compound engine. The seating is exten de d and provided withtports 14, and the valve with a groove 15 so that the steam may enter the ports 9 from both ends. The valve is closed by a spring 21, its movement being tempered by a dash-pot 18, and it is opened by a releasing-gear comprising a lever 27 worked by the bell-crank lever 31 and carrying a tappet 26 which acts upon the valve lever and is tripped by an adjustable bell crank 38. The exhaust valve 7, Fig. 5, is hollow and controls the ports by its lower edge ; it is worked by the linkage gear 56, 60, 66, 71. The two valves in one chest are worked by one rod 34 or 71.
