Abstract

20,326. Challiss, P. G. Oct. 7. Gas and like engines.-To keep the compression constant at all speeds, the capacity of the combustion chamber and the lift of the inlet and exhaust valves are simultaneously adjusted by regulating the position of the crank and cam shafts respectively. Fig. 2 shows a four-stroke-cycle engine in which the crank-shaft D is eccentrically mounted in the adjustable end A<1> of a crank casing sup. ported by an outer casing or straps B. The volume of the compression space is varied by partly rotating the crank casing A' by means of the worm or other gearing V, V<1>, thus altering the position of the crank-shaft and its connexions. The lift of the controlling-valves is adjusted by regulating the position of the cam shaft M, which is carried by the adjustable ends A' of the crank casing. The cams M', M<2> operate the pivoted lever 0, 0<1> through curved arms shown in Fig. 2 embracing the cam shaft.
