VALVE-OPERATING MECHAIISM.
i Bpeclcation of Letters Patent.
Patented @et 22,
Application led February 18, 1918. Serial No. 217,963..
To all 'whom t may camera." l
Beit known that I, ARTHUR B. MOCORD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Oak Park,in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in valve operating mechanism, particularly for interna combustion engines, and the objects of my improvement are:
First, to produce automatically operable means to 'control the amount of fuel intake.
Second, the production of mechanism for automatically taking -up possible wear of working surfaces in addition to the per formance of the functions of a overnor.
An important feature of my invent-ionis the construction and arrangement of parts to act as a governor to prevent too rapid acceleration of the sleeve valve and to automatically take care of the expansion and contraction of theparts caused by excessive heat and cold. 4
With the foregoing and other` objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features and in the novel combination and ai'- rangement of the parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and particularly i pointed out in the claims hereunto appended; i-t being understood that changes, variations and modifica tions in the details of the inventionwithin the scope of theclaims, may be resorted to without'departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
l In the drawings, Y l
Figure 1 is a centralfsectioii of a single cylinder engine with a sleeve valve partly in section showing in elevation valve means for reciprocating the sleeve valve, y Fig. 2 is an end elevation of valve operating mechanism fixed to the sleeve valve and in operative relation to a cam-shaft,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-7-3 on Fig. 1,
Figiltjs'alsection on line 4.--4 on Fig. 2,
jFig. 4'-is-"a sectional view on 5 5 on Shaft take ports 12 and exhaust ports 13 through u the sleeve valve 9, adapted to register timely and suiiiciently in operation-of the engine.
Within the sleeve valve 9 is the usual piston lfl'suitably connected with the rod 15 in operative relation with the crank 16 of crank shaft 17 which carries sprocket 18 which meshes with chain 19 in mesh with sprocket 20 fixed to cam-shaft 21 and also in mesh with sprocket 22 on magneto shaft 23. The cam-shaft 21 is mounted for movement one half as fast as the crank-shaft 1'?.
The reference numeral. 2e denotes the intake manifold and the numeral 25 designates the exhaust manifold.
The sleeve valve 9 near one end and enter nally thereof and preferably lintegral therewith is formed with parallel bosses 26 and 27 to which is detachably secured a bracket or oke member 28 by any preferred means, as erein shown by screws 29 at one end and 30 at the other end. lit will be noted the free ends of the member 28 are formed with out- -wardly extending flanges 31, 32, the flange 31 engaging with the inner edge of boss 26 and the flange 32 engaging with the cori'ei and the upper part of bracket 28 and pre' vents rotation of said shaft. A shaft 37 is formed with an eccentric portion 38 and extends .through the lower end of the' bracket 28 to receive the roller39. on the eccentric part 38. The rollerBQ contacts with cam 40.
.To the shaft 37 is secured a curved govern- `v ,lever .or arm l, ,h aviiiga taper pin 42 through the arin l1 that engages the shaft 37 at 43 to prevent turningoi the shaft 3'? relative to the lever el. Fixed to the free end and extending beyond the governing lever il is a resilient element it in operative ,relation near its. apertured end, i with acl-- ver di. lt will he noted that by`1neans of the eccentric portion 38 the roller 39 is held in Contact with the cani l0 by the tension oi the resilient element 44, which may be `changed at will, and the variations in the dimensions oi' parte caused by expansion by heat and contraction by cold are taken care of automatically.
The shaft 33 has an oil groove 5l and the shaft 37 has a. similar oil groove 52 formed therein.
My governing device comprises bracket :28' in which is mounted shaft 37 having an eccentric part .38 which carries the roller 39 in contact with the cam 40. The shaft .37 has rfixed thereto the governing lever el at one end oli which is the resilient element le in operative engagement with the tension means 4.6.
The resilient element it prevents the in take ports 10 Yfrein opening its full stroke at high speed. i further advantage et the element 44e is to provide a taire up in case of Wear by means oit bolts 46. rlhe element flaserves as a bumper to prevent excessive noise and Wear on roller 39 and thus acts as a got# ernor for the intake valve. 'W hen the engine throttle is suddenly opened the pressure against the roller 39 is so great the resilient element 44 will yield and instantly the roller 39 will be in. position sufficiently to prevent the intake ports fully openinnf. l
At low speed the element 44- is not tiered at all.
Adjustment to limit maximum speed of the engine is accomplished hy changing,I the degree of force required to den the resilient element 44:. rlightening the bolt 46 increases the tension and loosening the holt L16 diminishes the resistance of the element The result of such adjustment is to control the speed oi the engine by limiting the quantity of gas that may pass through the intake ports into the engine cylinder for combustion.
ln operation when the engine throttle is opened too quickly the cam 40 will strike the roller 39, With such torce as to cause the governing lever and its resilient element le to yield and lier: so that the arm il and the element 44 Will talc the position indicated.
'by the dotted line 50, thereby increasing the distance hetiveen cani-shaft Q1 and the cani roller 39, and thus preventing the intake ports l?, of the sleeve 9 fully registering with the intalre ports l0 ot the fired cylinder 8, and thus limiting the fuel charge to the engine.
By showing and describing one embodi- :nient oi.' my invention it do not intend torestrict the range et equivalents not made nec essary' oy-the prior state et this art.
Having thus tally described my invention, what l ciaim new, and desire to secure hy LettersPatent ist l. in mechanism of the class described, the combination with sleeve valve having a bracket hired thereto and earn rneansfor reeiprocatino,a the sleeve valve, of a govern.- ing lever including a shaft having an eccen trie portion and cani-roller thereon at one end and at the other end said lever having a resilient connection with said bracket to control the speed oi? the engine by'limiting the quantity oi" that may pass through vthe intake ports into the engine cylinder.
2.. ln an iiiternal combustion engine, the combination with sleeve'valve having a hrackct hired thereto and earn means to reciprocate the sleeve valve, of a governing' lever including a. shai't havii'ig an eccentric portion and a cani oil-er thereon and at one end having resilient connection with said bracket and tension ineens carried by said bracket.
