.INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINE.
Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented June 16, 1914.
Appuaon ma april 19, 1913; serialnmeaazs.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, GABRIEL Bonnema, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Erith Works, Erith, in the county of Kent, En land, have invented certain new and usefu Improvements in or Relating to Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specication. p
This invention relates to improvements in internal combustion engines, particularly` those used for the propulsion of aerial craft.
According to my improvements the operating surface of the cam used for actuating the valve mechanism is so shaped at the parts between the bosses orprotuberances thereof (which are disposed in the usual marmer at 120 apart) that by driving the caml in the reverse direction to and at a speed of one sixth that of the engine crank shaft it can be used to properly operate the inlet and exhaust valves of an engine comprising fourteen cylinders arranged radially in two rows of seven or by turmng the cam over so that the back then becomes the front and drivin of the kcra vshaft and at the same speed as before it can be used to properly operate the inlet and exhaust valves of an engine com-- prising ten cylinders arranged radially in two rows of ve, without requiring to alter the contour of the cam operating surface. In order that the said, improvements may be clearly understood and rea-dil carried into e'ect the same will be descri d more fully with reference tothe accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face View of the aforesaid cam. Fig. 2 is a vertical section showing the said cam applied to an engine having fourteen workin cylinders disposed in two rows of seven. ig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 1 showing the said cam arranged for an engine having ten working cylinders disposed in two rows of tive.
A is the cam which is driven by suitable gearing from the crank shaft B of the engine.
C C are the working cylinders extending l inwardly to open them at the proper time it inthe same direction as that` against the resistance of the springs, by rocking levers C3 pivotally connected at ca to rods C. These rods are pivotally connected at o* to the tappet rods a which extend through radial guides o on the engine casing C". The said tappet rods have rollers c5 which are caused to bear continuously against the operating surface of the cam A by the action of helical springs c* surrounding the tappet rods. The said cam has on its operating surface three bosses or protuberances a situated in the same plane at 120 apart as aforesaid and' the intervening surfaces between these bosses or protuberances are made in the form shown by Figs. 1 and 3. When the 'said cam is to be used with a fourteen cylinder engine as in Fig.
2, it is driven from the crank shaftby toothed I Wheels b b2 of which the latter meshes with internal teeth 0 on the said cam which is in the form of a ring detacha-bl connected to the portion that revolves on t e antifriction balls of its bearing carried by a partition c7 forming part of the engine casing Cx in which partition the ball bearing for the adjacent end of the crank shaft is also mounted. The arrangement and ratio of the gearing is such that the cam revolves in the opposite direction to that of the crank shaft and at one Asixth of its speed. When the said cam is to be used with a ten cylinder engine it is turned over so that the back becomes the front and driven from the crank shaft by toothed wheels b b2 b3 (see Fig. 3) of which the latter meshes with the internal teeth c of the cam. The arrangement and ratio of the gearing are suclrthat the cam revolves in the same direction as that of impart to it the proper speed and di-.
rection of revolution relatively to the crank shaft.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:-
In a multiple cylinder internal combus tion engine t e combination with the inlet and exhaust valve mechanism, of an inverti- In testimony whereof I affix my signable and reversible cam provided with three ture in presence of two Witnesses.
