Stoppers, vacuumclosing.-Relates to means for sealing jars, pots, bottles, &c., p a r t i cularly those containing preserved f o o d s &c., and in which the lids are held closed by atmospheric pressure. The mouth of the vessel is formed with ai inclined ledge a' bounded by an inner bead, and provided with a washer b, upon which an annular projection b<1> on the lid is adapted to seat. The inner side of the lid is formed with a cavity b<2>, to afford additional space for creating a good vacuum. To open the vessel, the vacuum is destroyed by puncturing the lid, if of metal, or, in the case of a glass lid, by passing a knife through a gap a<3> in the lip of the vessel and forcing it through the washer. A metal clip C may be used to retain the lid in its sealed position. Or the neck may be screwthreaded to receive a screw ring or cap adapted to bear on the lid near its circumference. In a modification, the lid may be formed with the ledge, and the receptacle with the annular projection.
