1372. Lees, G. Jan. 20. Stoppers.-An earthenware or other jar for containing and preserving food &c. is closed by a metal cover with an india-rubber gasket or washer. The jar is exhausted and the cover is kept in place by atmospheric pressure. The cover c, Fig. 2, is recessed and fits into the mouth of the jar, its flange d extending over the edge of the jar and having a roll edge e, which grips the edge of the jar when the cover is forced down. An india-rubber or other wakher f is placed under the flange of the stopper, and is forced into a recess b in the jar neck when the cover is forced down. The washer f is preferably of slightly greater diameter than the recess b. The middle part of the cover is preferably convex so that the atmospheric pressure flattens it and forces the sides of the cover against the jar.
