Capsule closures and retaining-bands for special closures.-A bottle, jar, or can is closed by a cap d, Figs. 2 and 3, having an upper cylindrical part d' and a series of depending lugs g with enlarged ends which engage a groove b in the bottle or like neck. The lugs are formed by turning in the lower edge of the flange of the cap and cutting a series of slots f in the head thus formed and the flange. A packing-ring c is interposed between the bottle mouth and the cap, and the lugs are pressed into engagement with the groove by applying a ring h. As shown in Fig. 1, this ring may be formed of a strip h, the ends of which are connected by a tongue h<1> and grooves h<3>, the tongue being turned back over the bridge-piece h<1> to secure the ends. In a modification, the packing-ring is placed in a rebate surrounding the mouth. In the case of metal cans, a bead is formed on the edge by turning the metal inwards or outwards, and the groove is formed by corrugating the body of the can. The slots f may be T-shaped
