Exhaust - silencers for internal - combustion engines consist of two concentric cylinders a, b, between which are placed metal balls or pebbles c, either filling the whole space or only the part above a perforated ring f supported by collars on the bolts j. The exhaust pipe h opens into the central chamber g, and its open end may be covered by a perforated cap, or may screw into a perforated vessel h<1> supported by a bolt i. The gases pass through perforations a' into the annular space, and escape through perforations b<1>.
