Abstract

731,222. Pistons. HUMBER, Ltd., and VIGERS, R. W. July 21, 1953, No. 20189/53. Class 122 (1). A piston, for an internal-combustion engine, in which the crown 3 is secure.d'to the body 1 of the piston by a stud 6 on the rear-face of the crown and passing through the head of the body to be engaged by a nut 12 within the. body, has a resilient washer 14 of the Belleville type clamped between the nut and the head of the piston body. A bearing plate 7 of heatresistant hard metal such as cast iron may be interposed between a crown 3 of heat-resistant steel (e.g. machined from a drop-forging of K.E. 965 austenitic steel) and a body 1 of aluminium alloy, cast iron or other metal and may be arranged so that the area of contact between the crown and the plate is restricted to two, three or more annular rings 8, 9 concentric with the stud 6 or a spigot 4 integral with the stud. As shown, the rings 8, 9 are formed on the crown and the ring 9 is preferably thinner than the other so that it seats only under pressure of the nut, the rings 8, 9 making gas-tight seals on the plate 7. The nut 12 has an integral flange 13 of larger diameter than that of the opening 5 in the body 1, and the piston is intended for use in the opposed-piston'engine described in Specification 648,117.
