9955. Sprowson, W. April 30. Safety retaining- apparatus. - Relates to safety gear for lifts suspended by ropes, chains, or the like. The cage is hung in a bight of the rope, chain, &c. a, a', passing round pulleys such as shown, and to each limb of the bight is secured a guy rope, the two guy ropes g, g<1> being wound side by side round a shaft h and fixed thereto as at r. Thus, in the event of one portion of the suspending-rope breaking, tension is put on the guy rope attached to the other portion, and the shaft h is consequently revolved and gripper cams k, Fig. 3, carried by it caused to engage the guides o and arrest the cage. As shown, two suspending-ropes are employed, the guy ropes from the second pair being wound on the shaft h in the same way as the ropes g, g<1>. In a modification, the guy ropes are attached to the horizontal portions a<2> of the suspending-ropes and led round guide-pulleys to the shaft h.
