Abstract

12,795. Stokes, F. W. S. June 21. Sluice gates.-The rollers of free-roller sluices are mounted on a chain which may be (1) continuous and passed round the wings of the gates, (2) discontinuous, the ends of the chain being connected by ropes or chains, or (3) connected at 'one eng to the gate and at the other to a rope. (1) Fig. 3 shows the endless chain of rollers arranged about one wing of a gate, and Fig. 2 shows a plan of a sluice gate so fitted. The rollers B are connected by links b, b<1> and arranged about the wings a, which work in recesses C, roller paths c being formed. Alternate links b<1> have projections on them which engage in depressions in the recesses C or wings a in order to prevent the rollers from being displaced. (2) In the form shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the train of rollers is discontinuous and the end rollers are connected together by flexible connexions b<3> which pass over pulleys a<2>. (3) In the form shown in Fig. 9, one end of the chain is fixed to a lug a<3> on the gate, the other being supported in the bight of a chain a<7>. The upper parts of the trains of rollers are connected by rigid bars b<4>. In the forms shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 9, where the train is discontinuous, the rollers should be raised and lowered as the gate moves. This is done by suspending the roller frame by a chain a<7>, one end of which is fixed to the masonry at a<4> and the other to the gate at a<5>.
