Abstract

106,347. Morgans, R. June 6, 1916. Winding-gear for collieries and the like; overwinding, preventing; sustaining at limit of wind. -Safety apparatus for preventing falling of the cages in mine shafts in the event of breakage of a winding-rope, or of an overwind, comprises duplicate winding-ropes each attached to both cages and driven by pulleys or sheaves on the winding-engine shaft; buffer arresting-devices are arranged at the bottom of the shaft, so that, if one cage is allowed to descend below the normal level, the ropes are slackened and lose their grip on the driving-pulleys, thus preventing the upper cage from being wound into the head-gear. As shown in Fig. 2, the ropes C are each attached to both cages d, D and are led round double head-sheaves b, B to the driving- pulleys a, A. As a modification, the driving- pulleys may be supported in the head-gear. At the bottom of the shaft, pairs of spring-supported inclined slides X gradually arrest the lower cage when it passes the level W, the upper cage then resting on pawls S in the head-gear, owing to the relaxation of the tension of the winding-ropes. The ropes C are attached to a plate F, Fig. 4, to which the bridle-chains E of the cage are attached by a shackle G<3>, and two auxiliary chains H are provided to support the cage in case of fracture of the shackle G<3>.
