Abstract

25,977. Hiss, N. March 8, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901] Rope railways. - Relates to apparatus of the kind in which the driving- pulley carries a bight of the hauling-rope, and while especially useful in connection with highspeed lifts or elevators, is applicable to other traction machinery such as short - travel cable railways. In the preferred arrangement in the case of a lift, the cage 1 is not driven direct from the motor, but through a " carrier " 24, which preferably carries sufficient weight to balance the average load, the cage itself being balanced by another weight. From one side of the driving- pulley 8, the rope 7 passes round a sheave 11 at the other end of the shaft, thence round a sheave 2 on the "carrier " 24, and is secured to a fixed point at 10. From the other side of the pulley 8, the rope passes round a second sheave 3 on the carrier, and is secured to a weight 12 which gives it the necessary tension. The pull of the weight 12 is transmitted equally to both limbs of the bight, passing round the driving-pulley 1, and, in operation, the weight 12 remains stationary. The same arrangement, and the number of modifications embodying the same principle, are described in their application to the cage direct without the intervention of a "carrier." In one, both ends of the rope 7 are fixed, and the tension is applied by the weight of the motor itself. Instead of the single pulleys 2, 3, two pairs may be used, or two double pulleys at the top or bottom of the cage. When, as is usually the case, a number of similar ropes is used, each has its own weight 12 or other tension device. bottom of the cage. When, as is usually the case, a number of similar ropes is used, each has its own weight 12 or other tension device.
