Abstract

11,120. Phillips, E. May 15. Lifts.-Relates to balancing and hand and power gear for lifts, hoists, and elevators. Ropes or chains d, Fig. 5, secured to the cage a pass over sheaves on shafts e mounted, preferably, at the sides of the well, and are connected to counterweights c. The shafts e are driven by worms h on a shaft i rotated by a hand rope k, or by belt gearing, or by electric power. In a modification, the cage is raised and lowered by ropes wound on drums separate from the balancing rope sheaves. Where two ropes d are connected to each counterweight, their other ends are connected to the cage, Fig. 2, by being passed round sheaves n and through eyes p on the cage, and connected together, stops r being fixed to the ropes on the inner sides of the eyes. By this arrangement, the two ropes can adjust themselves so that the cage may always hang level, and, should one of the ropes break, the cage is still supported by the other. In the case of cellar and like lifts, the ropes d are secured to the platform by bars 1 secured to the underside of the platform and projecting far enough to allow of the platform being raised flush with the tops of the guides b. In belt-driven lifts, the shaft i is fitted with fast and loose pulleys and with a brake disc and the belt slipper is moved by a rock-shaft, which also controls the brake. In belt and other powerdriven lifts, the worms h are preferably arranged below their worm-wheels to allow of oil-bath lubrication.
