5590. Hopkinson, A. A. March 7. Lifts; single-rope winding-gear for mines.-A balancing-device for singlerope winding-gear for mines and the like is shown in the Figure. The hoisting-ropes d, d<1> pass over a grooved pulley in opposite directions, and their extremities are connected by a balance rope e, which is preferably heavier,length for length, than the hoisting-ropes, and which hangs in a bight or may pass round a guide-pulley. These three ropes are about equal in length to the depth of the shaft. The arrangement also facilitates starting.
