Abstract

22,272. Laurenius, C. E. Oct. 15. Coking.-A retort furnace for charring or coking peat and the like is heated by the waste gases from the peat. A section through two retorts is shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section of four retorts. The peat is thrown in at the top through the damper c and passes down the conical tube b to the cast-iron lower portion a of the retort, which is heated by the fire upon the grate i. The gases from the peat enter an annular chamber d, from which they are led by a pipe e to a condensing and washing vessel f, after which they are led to the furnace by the pipe g, where they are consumed. Each retort is provided at the side nearest the fire with a burner j, through which the combustible gases from the hottest part of the retort pass to the fire.
