Destructive distillation; gas manufacture, materials for.-Waste coal from the wash or dirt heaps of collieries, preferably mixed with waste coke, is heated by external means in an oven through which steam is blown, whereby ammonia is produced. Instead of ovens a vertical shaft-furnace may be employed, in which the pipe conveying the superheated steam traverses its entire height. Steam may be admitted at two or three parts, and the furnace may be heated by means of gas-burners laid on from the outside in flues. The combustible gases generated may be used for heating the furnace.
