Coke ovens.-In horizontal ovens having end firing, gas, or a mixture of air and gas, is introduced through tubes 16 extending transversely across the flues through which the combustion products pass, whereby the gas, or mixture of air and gas becomes highly heated. The tubes 16 may be of any suitable cross-section so as not to obstruct the passage of combustion products, two forms being shown. A modified arrangement of flues is also described, in which the gasses pass from the lower flues extending nearly the whole length of the oven, through a vertical flue at one end to the top flue, and descend through a vertical flue at the other end. The tubes 16 in this arrangement extend through and across the end vertical flues.
