Abstract

15,836. Ballard, S. July 17. Furnaces with c o k i n g - chambers.- Steam-boiler furnaces are fitted with a coking-chamber or retort A, into which the fuel is fed through the door d<1>. The volatile matters pass over into conduits S in the casting D and are forced underneath the grate by jets of steam h<2>, superheated in pipes H. Air is drawn in through suitable openings in the front of the casting. The coke is raked out through the door d' and allowed to fall into the furnace through the door d<2>. The bottom a' of the chamber A is made in several parts fitted together with tongue-and-groove joints so that any one part can be renewed if necessary. Heavy oils, tar, or other like fuel can be used in the chamber A instead of coal.
