Abstract
23,184. Roulund, J. P. A. Oct. 26. Coking. - A gas-producer or furnace for use with steam boilers &c. also serves for the production of coke. Coal is fed in at the top of the furnace, and is partially burned in the middle, air being led in by the openings c, and the resulting gas being carried off through the openings d into the flue e, where it mixes with air from the flue f. The partly-burnt coal falls to the bottom of the combustion-chamber, which is closed by a water seal and fitted with a "grate" formed by toothed rollers g, which break up the coke formed and pull it into the water chamber h. This coke may be carried off by a car in the chamber h, or it may be raked out. The vapours rising from the water pass through the burning coal, forming water gas. By closing the inlets c and covering the shaft top, combustion may be stopped, the gas which still comes off being passed into the flue f.
