Abstract
6563. Naef, P. Sept. 11, A.D. 1899, [date applied for under Sec. 103 of Patents &c. Act, A.D. 1883]. Tar oils.-Relates to a method of burning fuel in such a way as to enable bye-products, such as tar oils and ammonia, to be obtained, and to prevent the production of smoke. The application of the invention to stationary and locomotive boilers, and to glass, reverberatory, open-hearth, smelting, and other furnaces is mentioned. The products of combustion of the fuel in the lower part of a shaft furnace are in part led away to heat the boiler &c., and in part led through the fresh fuel in the upper part of the furnace so as to distil the volatile products contained therein. These products are condensed in suitable apparatus, and the combustible gaseous residue is led away to the combustion chamber of the boiler &c., or to the lower part of the furnace. Figs. 1 and 2 show, diagrammatically, two methods of applying the invention in connection with steam generators. With the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, some of the gases resulting from the combustion of fuel in the bottom of the shaft 3 are led away through the conduit 7 to the combustion chamber 2 of a steam boiler 1, while the remainder are led through the fuel in the upper part of the shaft, and, together with the products of distillation, are led through the washer 19 where tar, ammonia, &c. are recovered, or through the pipe 19<a>, and finally delivered to the chamber 2, where they are burnt with air admitted at 26. Fans for supplying air and withdrawing the gases are indicated at 17 and 23. Water or steam is introduced at 15. Perforated bells 11 facilitate the passage of the gases through the fine fuel. With the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the bottom of the shaft 27 opens direct into an ordinary furnace chamber 28, being fitted with inclined firebars 30,which are preferably movable. In this case the gas and distillation products, after passing through the washer 34, are returned to the base of the shaft 27. Where a number of boilers are arranged side by side, the various shafts may be connected by mains 36 and 37.
