Abstract

24,426. MacLaurin, R. Oct. 28. Producers.-Oil, ammonia, and producer gas are obtained from bituminous fuel in a producer by passing heated gas through a column of the fuel, the temperature of which decreases upwards, and collecting the e condensed oils s within the upper part of the producer so as to prevent them from running back to the lower and hotter part of the column. In the form shown in Fig..1, the producer comprises three chambers a, b, c. In the chamber a, the fuel between the lines x, y is maintained at a temperature of from 500-700‹ C. for the generation of ammonia, and part of the producer gas i s withdrawn through an outlet f. The chambers b, c have wells m which serve to collect the heavier and lighter oils respectively condensed in the comparatively-cool fuel, these oils passing to outlet pipes o. The ammonia - containing gases are withdrawn through an outlet r<1>; part of the gases may be passed through the fuel hopper s. Air and steam may be admitted simultaneously or alternately to the space e below the grate d, the amount of steam being employed to regulate the temperature. In Fig. 2, the fuel-bed a is blown with air, the producer gas escaping bv an outlet f, and coal-gas or water-gas is blown in by openings M and passed through the body of fuel. Tar oils and coal or water gas may also be admitted by a pipe k. The gaseous products and ammonia pass through the chamber b and escape by a pipe r<1>, and the oils liberated from the fuel in the chamber b flow down, and are withdrawn by the pipe n. An outlet G serves to withdraw coke when desired, and a harder coke may be obtained by having a deeper fuel-bed.
