Stuffing-boxes.-A number of sets of cast-iron or other rings, each set consisting of two or more split inner rings a, and an outer split ring c, are used for packing piston and other rods. The rings are arranged so as to break joint, and the inner ones a are pressed against the rod b by their own elasticity, by the elasticity of the outer ring, or by springs. The sets of rings are placed, along with distance rings g, between sleeves e, and between the outermost ring and the cap i, which is provided with an elastic or non-elastic packing- ring m, a chamber k, and a drain hole l. The rings and sleeves are kept together longitudinally by springs o. An annular cavity in one or more of the sleeves, and between two sets of packing-rings, may communicate with a hole p in the cap i, which is tapped to receive a lubricator.
