Abstract

15,291. Smith, M. H. July 29. Gas or explosive-vapour engines, carburetting in. Oil or spirit is supplied from a nozzle A past a valve E, which is operated by a flexible diaphragm G acted on by the suction of the motor piston. The liquid falls on to gauze discs B', held between a cylinder V with internal radial gills V<1>. The exhaust passes through a jacket T', and the air supply through holes a and valve b into an outer jacket, and thence upwards through the gauze B'. The diaphragm G may be replaced by a disc, or loose piston, or a movable metal shell moving over a fixed one such as 6. The diaphragm is attached to a spring, and its movement is controlled by a screw L. The air supply may pass through an adjustable orifice below the valve, instead of the gauze B', or through a valve formed by the base of the upper cylinder V, the oil being filtered and delivered upwards from the bottom of the vessel. Gauze is placed in the delivery pipe to prevent back-firing, and the composition of the mixture is controlled by a combined disc and cylindrical grid valve 3, 4, which closes the passage from the carburetter as it opens that from the atmosphere, and vice versÔ. Spirit is ignited in the tray 16 at starting.
