At starting, a light spirit is supplied by a pipe n until the apparatus becomes heated, or it is heated by burning oil in a swivelling cup s with an air valve x below it. The oil is maintained at a constant level in the vessel w by the feed-pipe t and air escape pipe z. Lighting-oil or alcohol may be used in the apparatus.
