Abstract

1962. Meyer, R. A. Jan. 27. Liquid-fuel furnaces; air, supplying.-Relates to arrangements of air supplying and heating channels surrounding the spray of liquid fuel as it is delivered to a marine and other steam-boiler furnace. The apparatus is more especially suitable for use in cases where the fuel is injected under pressure by a pump, but is applicable also in connection with steam-jet or compressed-air induction apparatus. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 9, the mouth of the furnace flue is fitted with a cylinder b (shown partly broken away), having helical or straight vanes forming air channels. The liquid fuel is delivered through central openings in the front cover F. The inner ends of the channels may be open or closed, openings being made in the cylinder b for the escape of the air in the latter case, and if desired in the former case also. The outer ends of the passages may be closed by a ring or damper E, which serves to regulate the amount of air admitted. Fig. 5 shows a modified construction, in which the inner wall b is conical, and in which an annular baffle renders the air passages more tortuous. In place of the cylinder or cone and vanes, one or more annular series of tubes e, e may be employed as shown in Fig. 7. The apparatus may be made adjustable in the flue, in which case the fuel injector is relatively a fixture, and in place of the flat damper E a ring damper, fitting over the projecting portion of the apparatus, is employed.
