The lathe spindle A is driven by the belt B from a shaft D to which loose pinions E, E<1> are alternately connected by ratchet clutch mechanism. The pinions E, E<1> gear with toothed segments F, F<1> on a lever F' oscillated by the link N from a crank disc I on a shaft M driven by the belt K. The link N is adjustably connected in the slots H, J to the disc I and lever F<2> to vary the speed.
