Abstract

19,355. Marsden, T. R., and Platt Brothers & Co. Aug. 21. Carding-engines.-Relates to means for driving the doffer at a slow speed for piecing-up, and for automatically bringing the high-speed driving- mechanism into gear when the slow-speed has been in operation for a sufficiently long interval. The drop lever c carries two pinions f, h, of which the first gears directly with the wheel g and drives the doffer at the higher speed, and the second, when the drop lever is in its lowest position, drives the doffer at the lower speed through the pinion i, pulleys j and x, band w, and spur-wheel y. The pulleys j, x and pinions i and y are carried by the lever n, which by means of a spring 4 &c. is normally held with the pinion y out of engagement with the doffer wheel g. When, however, the drop lever c falls, the weight of the parts brings the wheel y into gear with the wheel g and the doffer is driven at the slow speed. By means of a suitable catch c<2>, the drop lever may be held in an intermediate position, so that the wheel f is disengaged from the wheel g, and the wheel h from the wheel i, in which case the doffer is not driven. For bringing the high-speed mechanism into operation after a suitable interval, the combined wheel and pulley i, j is connected by bevel gearing with a worm and worm-wheel t, u, of which the latter carries a finger for operating a weighted lever about the stud s<1>. When the weighted lever has been turned beyond its highest position, it falls and suddenly brings a cam or projection beneath the drop lever c so as to raise the lever and put the high-speed mechanism into gear automatically.
