Abstract

345,777. Opening or scutching cotton. PLATT BROS. & CO., Ltd., Hartford Works, and WILKINSON, H., 500, Ripponden Road, Barrowshaw, both in Oldham. Feb. 22, 1930, No. 5901. [Class 120 (i).] A single scutcher or lap machine for opening and cleaning cotton and for producing laps therefrom including a revolving beater e and long pneumatic tube f, Figs. 1 and 3, and dust-cages g, g<1> and wherein a feed lattice b is utilized and is fed from laps or by loose cotton, is divided into two sections the first comprising the lattice band any combined feeding apparatus, the regulating roller c and the feed rollers d, the second comprising the cages g, g<1>, cage rollers i and lap-forming mechanism j, k, and is automatically controlled so that the first section starts first and the second section at a determined time subsequently, and, on stopping, the first section stops first and the second section at a determined interval later. The lattice b is adapted to support a number of laps a and to feed the several lap-ends through the regulating roller c to the feed rollers d and opener e, the long pneumatic conveying tube f being, for instance, of the kind described in Specifications 177,017 and 204,085, [both in Class 120 (i), Spinning, Preparation &c. for]. The opener e is mounted on the first motion shaft 2 and is constantly driven from the pulley 1, Fig. 9. The shaft 2 is adapted to drive the fan h and, through a belt 3, the shaft 4 from which the two sections of the plant are driven. The lattice b, regulating roller c and feed rollers d are controlled by a clutch or catch-box carried on the shaft c<1> of the roller c, a spur-wheel 15 on the loose sleeve 16 of the catch-box being driven from the shaft 4 through the elements 5 .. 14. The feed rollers d and lattice b are respectively driven from the shaft c<1> through gears 40, 41, 42 and through the members 43 .. 47. The catch-box comprises a freely mounted half 16 having a ring of teeth 17, Fig. 7, a central element 18 keyed on the shaft c<1> and a half 19 having teeth 20 and movable axially on the shaft c<1> by means of the spring rod m<7> acting through the lever system m .. m<6>. The pendent bar m<6> may be held depressed by the lap drop lever n when the catch-box is to be clutched and the pull of the rod m<3> in moving the clutch half 19 serves to raise a weight m<8>. The dustcages g, g<1>, cage rollers i and lap-forming mechanism j, k are driven from the shaft 4 through a belt 28 and shaft 29. The fluted rollers k are driven through the gear wheels 30, 31 and the shaft 32 which carries the gear wheel n<2> of the lap drop lever n, the shaft 32 being mounted to permit the pinion n<2> to fall out of gear with the " spring-wheel " p when the lap drop lever falls. The calender rollers j, cage rollers i and dust-cages g, g<1> are driven respectively by the gearing 33, 34, 35. The "spring-wheel" p comprises a disc 21 fixed on the shaft j<1> of the lower calender roller and having an integral projection 22, Figs. 4 and 5, a toothed wheel 23 on the boss of the disc 21 having a driving abutment 24 and an adjustable stop 25, and a spring 26 in a housing 27 which acts to return the stop 25 into engagement with the projection 22 in the non-driving position. On lifting the lever n the rod m<6> is pulled down and the catch-box is put into gear to drive the lattice b, regulating roller c and feed rollers d. Subsequently, after a determined time, the gear-wheel 23 of the " spring-wheel " p becomes operative to drive the second section g, g<1>, i, j to produce a lap. Before completion of the lap a nog 37, Fig. 10a, acts on the spring-rod disengaging the bar m<6> whereupon the weight m<8> declutches the catch-box and the parts b, c, d stop. Subsequently a revolving catch 38 disengages the goose-neck lever 39 to release the drop lever n, the gear wheel n<2> falls and the wheel 23 returns to its zero position. Loose cotton may be fed to the lattice b by appropriate means e.g. a hopper feeder, and in Fig. 1 a combined hopper feeder q is shown the lattices q<1>, q<2> being driven from the shaft 45 of the lattice b through the members 48 .. 56. The cotton supply may be controlled from the catch-box by the connections m<11> .. m<14> as described in Specification 326,633, [Class 120 (i), Spinning, Preparation &c. for]. Specifications 329,037 and 329,050, [both in Class 120 (i), Spinning, Preparation &c. for], also are referred to.
